Throughout the lifecycle of a building, you can separate emissions into two categories: operational and embodied carbon. 30% of a building’s emissions come from the materials used, the construction and end-of-life processes. At 70%, operational carbon emissions originate from the energy used to operate the building, for instance through lighting, heating and water usage.
